Blue Origin launches all-female crew, including Katy Perry, on historic suborbital spaceflight mission.
In its eleventh human flight, the Blue Origin rocket carrying music sensation Katy Perry, journalist Gayle King and Jeff Bezos' fiancée Lauren Sanchez safely took off from West Texas. Film producer Kerianne Flynn, civil rights activist Amanda Nguyen and former NASA rocket scientist Aisha Bowe were also on the all-female crew.
Shortly after 8:30 a.m. (local time), the suborbital flight took off from West Texas and lasted for around ten minutes. The women had brief seconds of weightlessness during the fully automated journey, which carried them over 100 kilometers above Earth and beyond the internationally acknowledged Karman line, which marks the edge of space.
Since Valentina Tereshkova's solo flight in 1963, this is the first all-female space mission and Blue Origin's eleventh human spaceflight. Perry joins Star Trek actor William Shatner as well as other well-known Blue Origin guests on the mission.
Perry shared that she had mentally prepared for the journey by exploring astrophysics and reading the works of Carl Sagan. She expressed a long-standing fascination with the stars, reflecting on the idea that humans are made of stardust. For her, the mission extended beyond space travel as it was also about challenging limits and inspiring young girls to dream boldly.
The pop sensation, who is well-known for space-themed songs like Firework and E.T claimed that the mission reflects her passion for women's empowerment and STEM. Perry explained that becoming a mother, especially to her daughter Daisy had deepened her sense of strength and purpose. Blue Origin noted that the flight marked a historic first for women in space, with the mission patch honoring each woman’s legacy and dedication. At more than three times the speed of sound, the astronauts of the New Shepard take off for space.
