Walmart unveils Walmart Unlimited, a gamified shopping experience combining commerce, storytelling, and gaming.
By introducing a new gamified shopping experience that lets users shop in real time in a setting reminiscent of a video game, Walmart is aiming to appeal to younger customers.
According to a LinkedIn post by Spatial Audio, the gaming tech company that powers the new offering's gameplay launched Walmart Unlimited on Wednesday.
Four characters named Brooklyn, Milo, Raya, and Jabari play the new game, which is housed at WalmartUnlimited.com and combines immersive commerce, interactive storytelling, and gaming. The characters can shop for Walmart products in real time as they navigate a realm that resembles Walmart.
In April and May, further Walmart Unlimited updates will be made available. A request for comment from Walmart was not answered.
In a press release, Marc Whitten, the president of Create at Unity, stated that this announcement opens the door for new innovations in commerce for games and other virtual experiences.
Over the past few years, Walmart has used Unity to test immersive commerce in online worlds with House Flip, Avakin Life, and ZEPETO. Users may remodel, furnish, and sell virtual homes with House Flip. Walmart allowed users in Avakin Life to buy virtual versions of their newest clothing or get the virtual item for free when they bought the real thing. For upcoming brand integrations, Walmart and ZEPETO worked together to include immersive commerce features in a few areas of the Naver Z platform.
Walmart Realm, a gamified marketplace of immersive virtual shops, was introduced by the Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer in May.
Earlier last week in Las Vegas, at the National Grocers Association's annual meeting, gamification was a hot subject. Younger consumers are particularly drawn to gamification, according to James Councill, the loyalty and promotions business unit manager at ECRS, a company that specializes in retail solutions and point-of-sale systems.
