Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes leads another late-game comeback in a dramatic 19-17 victory to secure top spot in AFC West.
The Kansas City Chiefs extended their amazing streak of one-score game victories to 15 with a 19-17 victory over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday night. That win marked another thrilling chapter in the Chiefs' season but also secured their ninth straight AFC West title.
Despite a tough first half, in which Los Angeles came out and stifled the Chiefs to a 13-0 lead going into halftime, the team never quit in the second half. A Gus Edwards scoring run and a scoring throw by Justin Herbert to Quentin Johnston gave the Chargers a fleeting lead at 14-13 but was again overcome for a season-long theme: with an arsenal of resilience by both sides and Patrick Mahomes's playmaking, the Chiefs responded to all their opponents' best attempts in the second half.
Mahomes called for a long drive which setup a 31-yard attempt by the Chiefs' kicker Matthew Wright for a game sealing field goal that fell via the left upright and it sealed the win. Such a victory marked as it was critical for Kansas City, as it keeps two-game advantages over Buffalo Bills and Pittsburgh Steelers for No.1 position in AFC with one regular-season week to go.
The Chargers battled with injuries and a tough first half to remain competitive throughout the game. Quarterback Justin Herbert was good for 213 yards, passing for one touchdown, and the team remained in the hunt. However, it was Mahomes' clutch performance in the final minutes that once again proved decisive, and it's an illustration of why the Chiefs are so dominant in close contests.
With the win, Kansas City’s AFC West title is secured, and they continue to build momentum as they eye another deep playoff run.
