The Union Government of India has issued two important legal documents to formalize India’s sports governance framework—the National Sports Governance (National Sports Board) Rules of 2026 and the National Sports Governance (National Sports Tribunal) Rules of 2026. These rules were issued under the National Sports Governance Act of 2025 and are termed by some as a landmark sports development in the country’s efforts to move towards modern sports administration and dispute resolution. The National Sports Board has been created under these rules and will be the main body responsible for recognizing National Sports Bodies while providing uniform standards for governance, finance, and ethics in the sports world. The Board will consist of the Chairperson and two Members. These appointments will be made by the Central Government based on the recommendations of the Search-cum-Selection Committee formed as per the regulations.
The National Sports Tribunal has been created at the same time as the National Sports Board. The purpose of the Tribunal is to adjudicate disputes related to sports. In this, it will avoid the traditional method of sending sporting grievances through already overworked civil courts. By creating a dedicated forum, the government aims to provide faster, more accessible and cost-effective dispute resolution while reducing litigation multiplicity and enhancing judicial efficiency.
A distinguishing feature of these new rules is their integration of advanced digital infrastructure. The Central Government has mandated a dedicated online portal that will facilitate the entire dispute resolution lifecycle—from submission of cases and filing of documents to virtual hearings and publication of orders. This techno-legal framework modernizes sports administration and aligns India's governance practices with contemporary standards observed in developed nations.

Until recently, athletes, sports authorities, and other stakeholders encountered years of legal complications when trying to settle governance or administrative disagreements. The new Tribunal seeks to simplify this process by providing independent, neutral justice and minimizing related expenses. All of these developments indicate the dedication of the government to professionalizing sports governance in India. Since the law assigns recognition and standard-setting functions (to the Board) separately from dispute resolution (handled by the Tribunal), the system has checks and balances on the institutions involved.
