A US government-led study links inflammatory seed oils in Western diets to increased colon cancer risk.

A new study led by the US government has revealed that popular cooking oils used in ultra-processed Western diets may be one of the causes behind the surge in colon cancer cases. Unhealthy seed oils, such as sunflower, grapeseed, canola, and corn oil, could be triggering chronic inflammation in the body, which has been linked to tumor growth, according to the groundbreaking research.

While previous evidence linking cooking oils with colon cancer has been insufficient, the study did provide evidence that seed oils might cause colon cancer. Scientists looked for tumors in over 80 patients aged 30-85 years old who suffered from colon cancer. The researchers found that the tumors had high content levels of bioactive lipids-small oily molecules that accumulate in the body as it digests seed oils-comparison of which to healthier fats. These bioactive lipids were demonstrated to enhance inflammation and inhibit the body's innate healing mechanisms, while promoting tumour growth.

The study has further brought out a worrying relationship between these inflammatory seed oils and colon cancer with experts arguing that oils of high levels of omega-3, which can be found in avocados and olives, are healthier.

Dr. Timothy Yeatman, a physician-scientist and associate center director for Translational Research and Innovation at the TGH Cancer Institute, says it is time to reconsider aspects of the Western diet. He said that diets high in added sugars, saturated fats, and ultra-processed foods contribute to inflammation in the body, which now appears in colon tumors. Dr. Yeatman analogized cancer to an open, chronic wound that does not heal, while being inflamed and the immune system suppressed through poor nutrition, which allows cancer to flourish.

However, major US health institutions noted that moderate consumption of seed oils within a balanced diet has been demonstrated not to cause cancer.
