Chris Sale of the Braves and Tarik Skubal of the Tigers shine with dominant seasons to earn Cy Young honors.
Chris Sale of the Atlanta Braves and Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers have been named the 2024 Cy Young Award winners in Major League Baseball, marking a milestone in their remarkable comebacks from injury. Sale, who secured the National League award, and Skubal, who dominated the American League, each delivered Triple Crown-winning seasons for their respective teams.
Sale, 35, completed the 2024 season with an incredible 18-3 record and a 2.38 ERA and 225 strikeouts. His performance not only led the National League in wins, ERA, and strikeouts but also revealed his resilience after a chain of injuries, including Tommy John surgery. The Braves acquired Sale in the offseason, and his comeback season has been hailed as one of the best in his career as he earned his first Cy Young Award after completing multiple top-five finishes in previous seasons.
Meanwhile, Skubal, 28 years old, did amazing things in delivering a 18-4 record with a 2.39 ERA and 228 strikeouts, helping Detroit Tigers reach their first playoff appearance since 2014. This win by Skubal is a great achievement for the Tigers since he became their first-ever Cy Young winner since Max Scherzer did it in 2013. His achievement includes an astounding five consecutive wins where his ERA was below 2.00.
This marks the Cy Young honours as a great victory for both pitchers, highlighting their resilience and skill in overcoming adversity. In addition, these honours also underscore how the left-handed pitchers' presence is growing within the MLB; Sale and Skubal are just one of the many rare groups of lefties who have won the award in the same season.
