Investment designed to accelerate the launch of 5G in strategic markets and improve 4G coverage.
The third-biggest telecom operator in India, Vodafone Idea, has announced a big ₹30,000-crore ($3.6 billion) agreement with top network equipment providers, including Nokia, Ericsson, and Samsung. Within the following three years, this partnership will improve its 4G infrastructure and launch 5G
services as part of a larger ₹55,000-crore capital spending plan.
As the company moves closer to a stronger market position, CEO Akshaya Moondra highlighted the value of this investment cycle. With the agreement, Vodafone Idea will reach 1.2 billion people with 4G, up from 1.03 billion, and equipment deliveries are expected to begin soon.
Given that Vodafone Idea successfully completed testing in Chennai, which paved the way for planned expansions into Karnataka and Bihar, the relationship with Samsung is very interesting. The organization is also committed to using the latest innovations to save operational costs and increase energy
efficiency.
This capital investment has been funded by an equity raise of ₹24,000 crore, and discussions for further loan financing are still ongoing. Vodafone Idea is facing crucial challenges about debt repayment and adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues as it prepares for future development.
