Move aims to enhance national security by prohibiting foreign technology in connected cars.

Move bans foreign technologies in connected autos in an effort to strengthen national security. In the context of President Joe Biden's recent meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the US Commerce Department has proposed a restriction on the sale of smart cars that have Russian and Chinese software installed. Concerns over data privacy and cyber security dangers related to connected and autonomous vehicles are reflected in this decision, which aims to safeguard national security.

The embargo is an insurance policy against potential vulnerabilities provided by foreign technology, as stressed by Gina Raimondo, the secretary of commerce. The United States seeks to reduce the possibility of adversaries gaining illegal access or control of vehicles that are increasingly fitted with sophisticated technologies like cameras and GPS.

Hardware would be subject to the proposed regulations by 2030, and software by the model year 2027. By taking a proactive approach, this initiative aims to prevent the problems that Europe is facing—Chinese cars have quickly taken market share in Europe, prompting concerns about data security and management.

In light of a larger plan to lessen dependency on foreign technology and support domestic automobile manufacture, the US government is inviting public input on the proposal.
