The goal of innovative technologies is to advance global equity and access to sustainable energy.

IBM and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) recently revealed two modern innovations intended to address urgent global issues of equity and access to energy. IBM is leading the way in creating solutions that attempt to have a major impact on sustainable development by using its knowledge in artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and data analytics.

The newly introduced models— the Clean Energy Equity Index and AI-powered Electricity Access Forecasting—will be publicly accessible through UNDP's Data Futures Exchange's GeoHub. These tools empower researchers, policymakers, and community leaders with the insights needed to influence energy policy decisions effectively. Built on platforms such as IBM Cloud and Watsonx, these resources are particularly vital for promoting a fair energy transition in developing countries.

The collaboration between IBM and UNDP has expanded the IBM Sustainability Accelerator program, which focuses on using technology to address environmental challenges faced by marginalized communities. Over the past two years, the partnership has developed predictive technologies aimed at improvng energy access by 2030 and assessing energy equity in the Global South.

"By making these innovative models freely accessible, we empower leaders and community members to make impactful energy decisions globally," stated Justina Nixon-Saintil, IBM's Vice President and Chief Impact Officer.

Through these initiatives, IBM reinforces its commitment to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, ensuring that the global shift to cleaner energy sources is both rapid and equitable.
