Chennai to Become Epicenter of Cutting-Edge Broadband Innovation
Nokia is set to revolutionize the world of internet connectivity with its plan to establish the largest fixed network testbed globally in Chennai. This groundbreaking facility promises to accelerate advancements in ultra-fast internet, potentially transforming virtual reality, augmented reality, and the broader technology landscape.
On Friday morning, Nokia will officially sign a deal to set up this monumental testbed, which will focus on testing 10 gigabit (G), 25G, 50G, and 100G passive optical networks. The investment, estimated at around Rs 450 crore, will make this center one of Nokia’s most significant research and development (R&D) labs, with a strong emphasis on fixed wireless access, multi-dwelling unit solutions, and advanced access networks and home controllers.
The agreement will be finalized in San Francisco in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, who is currently on a 17-day trip to the US to attract new investments. This visit marks his fifth overseas trip since the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party came to power in 2021, following previous trips to the UAE, Singapore, Japan, and Spain.
The new Nokia facility will be located at the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu in Siruseri. T.R.B. Rajaa, Tamil Nadu's Minister for Industries, Investment Promotion, and Commerce, expressed pride in the development, noting, "Tamil Nadu has become a global hub for R&D and technology services. It’s a testament to our efforts and the Tamil Nadu R&D Policy 2022 that we’re welcoming the largest fixed network lab in Chennai."
