Second Brain Chip Implant Success

Musk praised the advancement, saying that the trials have gone exceptionally well with the second implant

CEO Elon Musk announced that Neuralink has successfully implanted its device in a second patient, marking a significant step in the brain-computer interface technology. This revolutionary technology is anticipated to assist paralyzed individuals to control digital devices through their thoughts. 400 of the device's 1,024 electrodes were revealed to be functional in the second patient, who survived a major spinal cord injury from a diving accident.

Musk praised the advancement, saying that the trials have gone exceptionally well with the second implant with a lot of signals and a lot of electrodes working very well. This is followed by the success with Neuralink's first patient, Noland Arbaugh, who received his implant in January. Arbaugh has since been able to play video games, browse the internet, and operate his laptop through mere thought, significantly enhancing his independence and reducing his reliance on caregivers. Neuralink encountered initial setbacks with Arbaugh’s implant due to wire retraction, but improvements to the device’s algorithms have restored its functionality. Arbaugh has a new world record to his name for cursor control speed using his thoughts with only 10-15% of electrodes working.

In 2024, Neuralink aims to implant its device in eight more patients as part of its clinical trials. This technology marks a crucial step in transforming technology in assisting individuals with acute mobility disabilities.
