In a powerful statement during Microsoft’s FY24 Q3 earnings report, CEO Satya Nadella reaffirmed the tech giant’s unwavering commitment to cybersecurity, declaring it the company’s foremost priority. “Security underpins every layer of the tech stack, and it's our No. 1 priority,” Nadella stated. “We are doubling down on this very important work, putting security above all else, before all other features and investments.”
In a strategic move to fortify this commitment, Microsoft announced in May that it would tie a portion of top executives’ compensation packages to meeting set security thresholds. This initiative aims to hold leadership accountable and expedite responses to security issues, ensuring prompt remediation.
Microsoft's intensified focus on cybersecurity extends throughout the organization. In an internal memo obtained by The Verge, Chief People Officer Kathleen Hogan emphasized that "everyone at Microsoft will have security as a Core Priority." Employees are now expected to prioritize security in their workflows, with performance metrics tied to promotions, salary raises, and bonuses. An internal FAQ elaborates that delivering on security objectives will be a crucial factor in assessing impact and recommending rewards.
Despite the disbandment of its Diversity, Inclusion, and Equity (DEI) team due to "changing business needs," Microsoft remains committed to these values. Security and diversity have become integral to performance discussions, reflecting the company's holistic approach to fostering a secure and inclusive workplace.
As part of Microsoft's comprehensive strategy, employees are encouraged to integrate security into product design processes, ensuring that end products offer a “safe haven” for customers.
