SAP Restructures Executive Board Leadership Departures

SAP’s CEO, Christian Klein, acknowledged the contributions of White and Russell to the company’s cloud transition and Business AI leadership

With the unannounced resignation of Chief Revenue Officer Scott Russell and Chief Marketing and Solutions Officer Julia White, effective August 31, 2024, SAP is going through major changes within its Executive Board. Since the contracts for both executives were scheduled to expire in 2027, their departures came as a surprise.

The software giant has provided limited details regarding the reasons behind this reshuffling. SAP’s CEO, Christian Klein, acknowledged the contributions of White and Russell to the company’s cloud transition and Business AI leadership, expressing gratitude for their efforts. The newly appointed Chairman of SAP's Supervisory Board, Pekka Ala-Pietilä, highlighted the company's successful cloud transition and proposed that the changes are a part of the company's transition into a "new era of growth." However, neither Ala-Pietilä nor Klein elaborated on why White and Russell will no longer play roles in this vision.

Russell, who has been with SAP since 2010, was crucial in overseeing global sales and customer engagement. His role will temporarily be assumed by Klein, as SAP searches for a successor. The company had already shifted its approach to cloud transformation by creating a new Customer Services & Delivery department in April 2024, indicating a more focused approach to sales in the future. White, who joined SAP in 2021 after a tenure at Microsoft, will not be replaced. Instead, SAP will integrate product marketing more closely with product teams, streamlining its Executive Board to seven members, now predominantly male. This restructuring aligns with SAP's broader strategy to prioritize AI and suite-focused solutions while navigating ongoing workforce reductions.
