Indonesia's New Capital Nusantara: A Vision of Sustainability and Renewal for a Greener Future

Indonesia marks its 79th Independence Day with a historic celebration in Nusantara, the nation’s new capital. President Joko Widodo and top officials are in attendance as the country embarks on a groundbreaking project to relocate its capital from Jakarta to this ambitious new metropolis.

Nusantara, situated in the lush rainforests of Borneo, is designed to be a model of environmental sustainability. The city’s development is centered on integrating with nature, preserving the existing landscape rather than altering it. "The core concept is environmental sustainability," explained Danis Hidayat Sumadilaga, Head of the Nusantara Development Task Force. "We are building the city by following nature's contours, using low-lying areas as water reservoirs. We’ve already established 15 of these, ensuring the design complements the natural topography."

The move to Nusantara is driven by Jakarta’s pressing issues, including deteriorating infrastructure, severe flooding, and pollution. The new capital represents a fresh start and a chance to address these challenges.

Urban planning expert Yayat Supriyatna raises questions about Nusantara’s future role as a growth hub. “Can Nusantara become a thriving economic center? What sectors will succeed there? Its appeal means it must compete with other cities, so the government must swiftly develop key areas like health, education, and tourism.”

With an estimated cost of around $35 billion, the Nusantara project aims to be fully powered by renewable energy by 2045. As Indonesia steps into this new chapter, Nusantara stands as a testament to the country's commitment to sustainability and innovative urban planning.
