The Panama Canal draft limits are once again falling, as water levels and a strengthening El Niño raise concerns for the global marine shipping industry. The Panama Canal Authority stated that the maximum authorized draft limit for neo-Panamax ships would be reduced to 48 feet (14.63 meters) from August 26 and to 47.5 feet (14.48 meters) from September 3, 2026.
As stated by the authority, the draft limit reduction is due to the decreasing water level in Gatun Lake and the hydrological forecast. It is the fourth and fifth time draft limits have been lowered this year.
Although transit numbers are not expected to change anytime soon, the decreased draft limits are likely to leave many ships carrying less weight on board, as Panama Canal draft limits impact global supply chains and freight planning for container carriers, LNG operators, and bulk shippers.
The announcement revives memories of the severe 2023–2024 Panama Canal drought, when, due to dry conditions, draft limits were reduced to 44 feet, and daily limits were imposed, resulting in queues of more than 160 vessels waiting to pass through.
Since that time, the canal has implemented measures for water resources. Nevertheless, the forecasts are being monitored because El Niño-related shipping disruptions are becoming more severe.
According to the U.S. Climate Prediction Center, there is a 97 percent chance that El Niño will persist through early spring 2027. The weather phenomenon causes precipitation in Panama and adds to the burden on one of the world's busiest transportation hubs.
