California Public Utilities Commission approves plan for 7.6 GW offshore wind, boosting clean energy and job creation across the state.
The California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has solidly approved a landmark proposal to advance the development of 7.6 gigawatts (GW) of offshore wind power by 2035. This pivotal decision, made on August 22, 2024, represents a significant stride toward bolstering California’s renewable energy infrastructure and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
The plan, initially proposed last month, outlines a need for up to 7.6 GW of offshore wind, alongside additional geothermal systems and long-duration energy storage (LDES). This move addresses a critical gap in California’s renewable energy mix, which has traditionally been dominated by solar power. The inclusion of offshore wind will enhance energy reliability and efficiency, particularly during peak demand periods.
Adam Stern, Executive Director of Offshore Wind California, lauded the decision, highlighting its potential to create jobs and attract investments. The CPUC's plan aligns with California’s broader goal of achieving 25,000 MW of offshore wind capacity by 2045, enough to power 25 million homes.
The CPUC's decision also includes a phased procurement strategy to manage costs and encourage competition, with a focus on minimizing ratepayer risks. The Department of Water Resources (DWR) will oversee solicitations and procurements, ensuring a balanced approach to cost containment and innovation.
This announcement underscores California’s commitment to leading the nation in renewable energy advancements and sets a precedent for future green energy projects.
