Leyen Re-elected European Commission President

The realization of an all-encompassing “European Defense Union," with various initiatives aimed at developing advanced air and cyber defense, is her primary vision

Gathering 401 votes in favor against 284 opposing votes, Ursula von der Leyen wins the European Commission President honor for the second term. In her speech addressing the Parliament prior to the secret ballot, she elaborated on her ambitious agenda. In her second term, she aims to strengthen Europe’s standing in the world in an era of advancing geopolitical challenges and environmental adversities.

The realization of an all-encompassing “European Defense Union," with various initiatives aimed at developing advanced air and cyber defense, is her primary vision. She proposes this in the face of the current Ukraine war and the larger political conditions across the world, by emphasizing Europe’s obligation to strengthen its defense units. Furthermore, she promised to work towards the success of the “Green Deal” transformation by reiterating her enduring dedication to the EU’s climate agenda. The objective of this deal is to reduce the effects of increasing climate change, which is in line with the Green lawmakers and has earned her huge support across various political parties in the Parliament.

Looking ahead, von der Leyen emphasized that the next five years will be crucial in shaping Europe's role in global affairs and urged solidarity and active leadership to overcome various challenges such as economic competitiveness and climate resilience. Her re-election signals continuity and determination to steer the EU towards a stable and sustainable future.
