The National Institute of Virology recently reported an alarming rise in dengue viral cases in Pune. A startling 50% positivity rate for dengue out of 100 samples tested was reported by the scientists at NIV. Dengue 2, the dominant serotype circulating, has been discovered as the most prevalent pathogen.
Dr. Anuradha from the NIV stated that there was a sharp increase in the number of cases in June, with almost half of the samples tested positive for dengue. The Pune Municipal Corporation’s Health Department has reported 487 suspected cases this year, with 157 suspected cases in June alone, of which 10 patients have been confirmed positive. Cautionary notices have been circulated in 788 locations across the city to spread awareness about the dangers of not eliminating mosquito breeding environments. Private hospitals have also reported various cases, including suspected Zika virus-like illness and chikungunya, and have highlighted the challenges involved in the diagnosis due to overlapping symptoms.
Habitual cleaning of containers and initiatives like local mosquito control programs has been adopted by the Health Department to control the outbreak. As the cases are on the rise, public awareness and preventive measures are vital to reduce the spread of dengue fever in Pune.
