The video was shared on social media platform X by Elon Musk, and it features a convincingly fake voiceover making derogatory comments about Harris. The YouTuber Mr. Reagan, who originally posted the video, shared it after labeling it as a parody. However, Elon Musk re-shared it without clear warnings of satire which has ignited concerns about misleading content.
The visuals in the video are sourced from Harris’ recent campaign ad, and it swaps the audio with another audio that realistically impersonates Harris. It has numerous denigrating comments about Harris’s identity and qualifications. Musk’s post, which circulated the video with the caption “This is amazing,” with a laughing emoji, reached more than 123 million users. Experts warn that advanced AI-driven contents can mislead many viewers. University of California, Berkeley digital forensics expert Honey Farid underscored the realistic nature of the video, and Rob Weissman of Public Citizen highlighted the immediate need for legal measures while voicing concerns about viewers who might mistake it for real.
As federal action remains limited, states are coming up with their own AI regulations. This incident emphasizes the need for more clear guidelines to address AI’s influence on political discourse and election integrity.
