This incident renders a significant setback to Karnataka's goals of turning into a distinguished hub for EV production in India.
The Karnataka government confronted a major setback from Ather Energy, a prominent electric car manufacturer headquartered in Bengaluru. The company’s decision to establish its new construction plant in Maharashtra prompted a heated debate in the state between the opposition BJP and the ruling Congress party.
Congress’s Industries Minister, M.B. Patil criticized the previous BJP government, alleging mishandling of land allocations that were crucial to Ather's plans. Patil asserted that despite Ather’s claim for 50 acres, only 35 acres were allotted, and the process was complicated by legal barriers. In response, BJP Deputy Leader of Opposition Arvind Belad criticized the Congress government for their inefficiency and held them responsible for losing Rs.2000 crore investment and the potential 4000 jobs opportunities to Maharashtra. This incident renders a significant setback to Karnataka's goals of turning into a distinguished hub for EV production in India. With each party carrying out heated exchanges over the loss, the incident underscores the challenges confronted in retaining the state’s capability and attractiveness to buyers amidst political discord.
Ather’s backing out of the deal highlights an urgent need for Karnataka’s government to prioritize proactive regulations and effective governance to regain faith and foster a robust industrial environment.
