Sony Pictures Joins Ramayana Movie for International Distribution Deal

Sony Pictures will distribute the Ramayana movie internationally, while India releases are handled by Dharma Productions.

  • Sony Pictures will distribute “Ramayana” internationally outside India.

  • Multi-language release includes an English-language version for global appeal.

  • DNEG, Hans Zimmer, and A.R. Rahman power the film’s scale.

Bollywood Movie Announcement: The international distribution for the two-part Indian epic “Ramayana” has been given to Sony Pictures. The movie is directed by Nitesh Tiwari and produced by Namit Malhotra’s Prime Focus Studios. The distribution will cover all countries except India where Dharma Productions owned by Karan Johar will distribute the film.

The plot revolves around Rama, the exiled prince, and Sita, his wife. Things take a turn in the lives of the main characters when the demon king Ravana abducts Sita, initiating an epic war depicted in the movie as the fight between good and evil. The cast members include Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Yash as Ravana, and Sai Pallavi as Sita. The film will be released in several languages, including English. The list of composers involved in the Soundtrack includes famous Oscar winners Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman. Terry Notary and Guy Norris will choreograph the action while Ramsey Avery and Ravi Bansal will handle the production design.

Visual effects will be delivered by DNEG, the eight-time Academy Award-winning studio also associated with Malhotra’s broader production network. DNEG’s recent and influential credits include major franchises and titles such as “Dune,” “Blade Runner 2049,” “Interstellar,” “Inception,” and “The Odyssey.” Prime Focus Studios previously co-produced “The Garfield Movie” with Alcon Entertainment for Sony Pictures, a release that has reportedly surpassed $257 million worldwide.

Prime Focus Studios framed the international distribution agreement as a continuation of its long-running approach to cinematic storytelling. Malhotra said the team aimed to honor the epic’s legacy while creating a film that can connect with viewers globally. He also described the collaboration with Sony Pictures and DNEG as a major opportunity to bring the story to worldwide audiences, highlighting its “timeless humanity and enduring values.”

“Ramayana movie” is scheduled for release in November, timed for the Diwali holiday period. In parallel, Prime Focus Studios is already working on other large-scale projects, including “Animal Friends,” a live-action/animation hybrid produced with Legendary Entertainment and Ryan Reynolds’ Maximum Effort, as well as “The Angry Birds Movie 3” for Paramount Pictures.

Business Honor views Sony Pictures’ international distribution of the Ramayana movie as a major push for global box office reach.
