A police officer in Bihar has been suspended after a video allegedly showing him firing an AK-47 during student protest police action in Bihar went viral, prompting a departmental inquiry and renewed scrutiny over crowd-control procedures. The incident took place during the state-wide Bihar Bandh student protest held on July 25, where student groups held protests in different districts of Bihar on different issues. However, there were violent confrontations between the protesters and the police in several places, which brought up the issue of police response during student demonstrations in India.
In its statement, the headquarters of the Bihar Police says that the officer in the viral video has been suspended while the department investigates the incident to see if the discharge of the firearm followed the required protocol for policing operations. Three protesters got injured amid the disturbances and are now under treatment at Jayprabha Medanta Hospital in Patna. Hospital authorities said their condition is stable. The list includes a 15-year-old child called Md. Arif, who got wounded due to being hit by a bullet while going back home from work. It was stated that doctors successfully removed the bullet from his body during the operation.
The opposition leaders harshly condemned the event. Bihar Leader of Opposition Tejashwi Yadav called for severe measures against the guilty persons and published a viral video on the web. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi also condemned the event, comparing it with other actions related to student protests. The Aam Aadmi Party blamed the government for the use of force on the peaceful protesters, while the police claimed that ensuring law and order is their priority.
Authorities said the ongoing inquiry will establish whether the officer followed official procedures and whether additional disciplinary or legal action is necessary. The investigation's findings are expected to determine the next course of action.
