Indian football fans gain clarity on FIFA World Cup 2026 viewing as Zee secures eight-year broadcast deal through 2034.

Zee Entertainment has now become the prime option for fans within India as they now will be able to watch every FIFA World Cup until 2034. In addition to this agreement, Zee will also have broadcasting rights to 38 other FIFA Tournaments and Events. Therefore, with these FIFA World Cup rights and all of the other rights combined, Zee's Sports Catalogue is beginning to take form and establish itself as a major player in international sport coverage. Zee has finally been able to end months of uncertainty and has solidified itself as a leader in providing Indian fans with the utmost reliable source of broadcasted sports. Additionally, while no pricing information has been provided by Zee to the media, there have been various media outlets reporting that FIFA originally had an estimated $100 million price tag associated with the Indian rights package prior to that figure being lowered through the negotiation process.
The 2026 edition marks a historic milestone as the first-ever 48-team FIFA World Cup, expanding from the traditional 32-team format and promising to deliver the tournament's largest edition to date. The expanded competition will feature 80 matches across North America, highlighting more teams and creating additional opportunities for global audiences to engage with international football.
Many of the biggest media companies in India have been interested in purchasing broadcasting rights to this event for some time now. JioStar (a joint venture between Reliance Industries Limited and Walt Disney) has reportedly made a competitive bid for these rights. Prior to this, Viacom18/ (its predecessor) were the video broadcasters of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in India and thus has an existing relationship on record with FIFA allowing them to make claims on being a competitive bidder. However, reportedly neither party reached agreement on the offer placed from JioStar/Viacom18 and FIFA. Sony (which held Indian broadcasting rights for the 2014 and 2018 FIFA World Cups) also explored whether or not to bid on these rights. They did eventually explore submitting bids for these rights but none of them was successful.
Recently, Zee have also launched four distinct sports channels: Unite8 Sports 1 (SD) and 1 HD; Unite8 Sports 2 (SD) and 2 HD as part of their ongoing strategy to improve their capabilities in relation to sports, as well as to provide Indian viewers with a better overall sporting experience. This acquisition is Zee's largest ever investment into sport and will place Zee at the heart of the FIFA calendar of worldwide football over the next 8 years. The deal gives Indian fans consistent access to the premiere international football tournament while giving complete coverage of many FIFA events up until the year 2034. With only a few days remaining before the World Cup starts, the deal removes uncertainty surrounding broadcast rights in India and gives fans uninterrupted access to the largest international sports event available.
Business Honor is of the view that Zee Entertainment's FIFA World Cup 2026 acquisition represents a transformative expansion of its sports broadcasting portfolio and long-term competitive positioning in Indian media.
