The New Year Honors List includes 1157 people recognized for their contributions to society; among them are actor Idris Elba knighted for his continued efforts to help young people in preventing crime throughout both the United Kingdom and the United States and across Africa. After over 20 years of work in philanthropy—including the establishment of his foundation with his wife, Sabrina—Elba has helped many different projects geared towards helping young people realize their full potential through education.
Elba received a £1500 grant from The Prince's Trust as a child and has become one of Britain's most famous television stars, proving how important it is to support young people early on in their lives. As he said at the time of receiving his honor, it is a testimony to the talent, determination and perseverance of all young people served by his organization and not just him alone.
In addition to Elba, England's women have received many accolades after dominating last summer's European Championships. The head coach of English women's national team, Sarina Wiegman, has been appointed honorary dame, while two-time European champion captain Leah Williamson has been awarded the CBE. Four Lionesses - Ella Toone, Keira Walsh, Alex Greenwood and Georgia Stanway - have been awarded MBE status as well; thus solidifying their place in history by transforming the way women play football around the world.
The honors underscore the continued momentum of English women's sport, extending recognition to the Red Roses rugby union team following their World Cup victory.
Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean will be forever remembered in the history of figure skating through the damehood bestowed upon Torvill and the knighthood bestowed upon Dean. Their legendary dance partnership amazed audiences for more than 30 years and has become a permanent part of British cultural heritage. Their significant contributions to their sport and to the nation's entertainment history have been formally recognized following years of performances and influential broadcasts.
The entertainment industry is prominently featured within this list. Meera Syal, comedy writer and actor who created and starred in the British sketch comedy television show Goodness Gracious Me and the award-winning sitcom The Kumars at No. 42, has received after many years of contributing to drama, literature and charitable organizations. Warwick Davis, who has appeared in multiple roles in Star Wars and has worked on numerous television productions for over thirty years, has been awarded an OBE (Order of the British Empire), which he has described as "the best thing that has ever happened to me".
This list contains a number of performance and television appointments. Both Matt Lucas and Richard Osman, who has made the transition from being a host on game shows to a best-selling author, were awarded with OBEs. Cinzia Erivo, who starred in Wicked and was cited as doing so well, was awarded with an MBE after claiming that she was shocked to be recognized for her performances. Gabby Logan of BBC sport and the BBC's Match Of The Day were also given OBEs.
The classical music world is represented by Richard Farnes (conductor), Alice Coote (mezzo soprano) and Max Richter (composer - known for his film scores for written works such as Waltz With Bashir and Hamnet), with an award to recognize their contributions to British classical music and to showcase them internationally.
Business Honor is of the view that Idris Elba's knighthood reflects strategic leadership in youth development and philanthropic impact across multiple continents globally.
