Renewable Energy Debate Dominates Automotive News Europe Congress in Brussels

Renewable energy fuels divide European auto industry as manufacturers race toward 2035 zero-emission targets and sustainability goals.

  •   Brussels hosts major automotive conference addressing Europe's 2035 emissions targets and competitiveness challenges

  •   Industry leaders from BMW, Ford, Nissan, Renault, Stellantis, Volvo and Toyota to share strategic insights

  •   Renewable fuels emerge as divisive topic amid push toward full vehicle electrification across continent

  •   Executives will examine trade pressures, regulatory evolution, and technological innovation shaping sector transformation

  •   Panel discussions tackle whether e-fuels and biofuels complement or hinder Europe's green mobility transition

On June 9 & 10, the Automotive News Europe Congress will be held in Brussels, where participants from across the European automotive sector will meet to discuss the future of the industry. The Congress' theme is "The Race to 2035: Building Europe's Competitive Green Auto Industry," and it will focus on how European auto manufacturers can stay globally competitive while at the same time adapting to rapidly changing regulations related to reducing air pollution from cars. The timing of this Congress is critical, as all European automakers are facing unprecedented pressures from many different sources. Europe has an aggressive target date for achieving zero net emissions from all transportation modes. In order to achieve this target by a specific date, automakers are required to deal with new and evolving emissions regulations, tensions related to international trade issues, and rapidly changing technology. Many of the world's largest automotive manufacturers, including the major automotive manufacturers: BMW, Ford, Renault, Nissan, Stellantis, Toyota, and Volvo, will discuss how they will work together to develop an economically sound and environmentally friendly green automotive industry in Europe.

Supporters of renewable fuels suggest that these alternatives to fossil fuel will help decrease emissions from existing vehicles and areas that are difficult to produce electricity from due to being too far away from a power supply. These areas include commercial aircraft, and long-haul freight. These markets are critical in maintaining a viable renewable fuels industry.

Opponents of renewable energy claim that funding for renewable fuels takes away from electric vehicle development, which is needed for Europe to meet their 2035 goals for the reduction in carbon emissions. They also state that there are several issues preventing large-scale production of renewable fuels, including difficulty with the supply chain, regulations, and having enough waste to create adequate fuel quantities. The panelists from Bosch, Repsol, Toyota and other experts will discuss these two perspectives publicly. Discussions will center on whether or not renewable fuels can reduce emissions produced by currently existing fleets of vehicles or if they hinder Europe from meeting its carbon reduction commitments.

The Congress demonstrates the larger tensions present in Europe's auto industry as OEMs (Original Equipment Manufacturers) juggle the need for current regulatory compliance with their future business strategy while also trying to compete against Chinese OEMs and American technology companies entering into mobility. The results of these discussions will greatly affect OEMs' corporate investment plans, government policy recommendations, and technological paths European businesses will take over the next decade as Europe seeks to meet its 2035 emissions goals.

Business Honor is of the view that the renewable fuels debate represents a critical strategic inflection point for Europe's automotive competitiveness and decarburization pathway.
