MG's new Spanish EV manufacturing hub signals strategic shift toward localized European production and supply chain resilience amid electrification transition.
|
MG, a Chinese auto manufacturer, has invested €200 million to build a car plant in Galicia, Spain, as part of the company’s European expansion plans, with localized production playing an important role. This new facility is MG’s first major manufacturing restart in Europe and will highlight MG’s strategic approach to becoming a true European player in the rapidly electrifying automotive industry. The Galicia facility will provide MG with the ability to create a complete industrial ecosystem — combining research and development, advanced manufacturing, component supply and logistics operations. The facility is anticipated to be in operation by 2028 and able to build up to 120,000 vehicles per year. This new facility will significantly increase MG’s EV manufacturing capacity throughout Europe, while it is also estimated that this investment will create more than 2,000 jobs in Galicia, thereby providing an economic boost to the Spanish economy.
The Spain-based facility will be dedicated to developing electric and hybrid technologies for vehicles. MG has launched the World's First Mass-Produced SolidCore Semi-Solid- State Battery - a breakthrough product that increases energy density and improves performance for next-generation electric cars; plus the manufacturer has significantly expanded its range of Hybrid+ and Plug-In Hybrid vehicles, offering many different ways for buyers to choose the way that they want to get to sustainable transport.
MG also intends to build strong partnerships with various European technology developers, research organizations and suppliers beyond just manufacturing. The goal of those partnerships is to develop new ways of using mobility and transport in the future, including developing next-generation battery systems, developing intelligent transportation systems and developing clean energy technologies. This strategy makes the Spanish Centre for Advanced Automotive Innovation more than just a manufacturing facility; it makes it a research centre for advanced automotive technologies as well. This investment follows on from incredible success that MG has had in Europe. Just this year MG delivered its one-millionth vehicle in Europe, showing how quickly the brand is growing within the European marketplace. MG has been back in the British market for 11 years and has become one of the fastest growing brands in the European automotive marketplace, with over 1,300 dealers in 34 European countries.
Business Honor is of the view that MG's €200 million Spanish facility investment represents a transformative shift in European EV manufacturing strategy and localized production capabilities.
