RBI wants a single platform showing UPI and credit card recurring payments, improving transparency and customer protection in India.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) urges the payments industry to develop an interoperable ‘payment mandates dashboard’ where consumers can view all their standing instructions across instruments, including UPI recurring payments and credit card subscription charges. This is to improve consumer protection for digital payments with the rise of subscription services in Mumbai, India. The Reserve Bank of India Executive Director P Vasudevan said, “Today, with UPI, we have a consolidated view of mandates. However, there is a need for cross-platform visibility of recurring mandates across various platforms. This means consumers need to see recurring mandates on various platforms like Visa UPI integration, Mastercard subscriptions, etc. Vasudevan added, “imagine a ‘unified payments mandate visualization platform’ where consumers can easily view, manage, and/or cancel their recurring charges without having to jump between different apps.”
The number of mandates for digital payments for recurring payments was around 87 crore in February 2026. This indicates how fast digital subscription payment usage is growing. It is becoming increasingly difficult for consumers to track their subscriptions and charges. RBI is also planning to build a Digital Payments Intelligence Platform, which will help in real-time risk scoring in payments as well as enhance fraud detection through the use of AI in payments.
Vasudevan also stressed that for mandates as well as grievance handling systems, the focus should be on ensuring actual interoperability, which should be the “mool mantra” for the payment ecosystem in India, making the management of subscription payments easy for the customer. The RBI also stressed that rule-based AI should be avoided, and context-aware AI should be used for fraud prevention. According to Business Honor, the initiative is a significant step forward in the promotion of transparency and customer-friendly solutions in the digital payment ecosystem of India.
