Dangote Fertiliser Sees Demand Surge amid Global Supply Disruptions from Conflict

The US–Israel conflict with Iran halts key fertilizer shipments, especially affecting urea and ammonia supplies globally.

Dangote Fertilizer Ltd. is seeing a big jump in demand. The ongoing US Israel conflict with Iran has thrown global fertilizer supplies into chaos. With traffic through the Strait of Hormuz at a standstill which is a route that is crucial for the supply chain of fertilizer especially when it comes to products like urea and ammonia. Devakumar Edwin who is the vice president at Dangote Industries summed it up pretty clearly: “Demand has increased significantly because of shortages in the international market.” Fertilizer exports from the affected regions have slowed down. On top of that, natural gas prices are up which makes it a tough spot for suppliers and buyers alike.

Dangote Fertilizer’s Lagos plant is Africa’s largest granulated urea facility, and about 37% of what they produce heads overseas, mostly to the US. Africa depends a lot on imported fertilizer. Dangote Fertilizer’s Lagos plant is Africa’s largest granulated urea facility, and about 37% of what they produce heads overseas, mostly to the US. Africa depends a lot on imported fertilizer. When the global market gets shaky, so does Africa’s ability to grow enough food. That is a real risk for agricultural productivity.

All this instability couldn’t come at a worse time for farmers, who are already scrambling to secure the nutrients their crops need. The fallout from the conflict is starting to threaten food security in many places, making it even more urgent to boost local production. Companies like Dangote Fertilizer are stepping up, working to fill the gap and keep agriculture moving.
