WhatsApp Launches Optional Password Feature, Improving Account Security

WhatsApp adds optional passwords to prevent SIM-swap fraud, strengthen verification, and improve mobile account protection for users.

WhatsApp has rolled out an optional password feature for iOS and Android, providing another level of security from SIM-swap fraud and account takeover attempts, as these types of crimes are on the rise. Meta Platforms, the parent company, has created an option for users to create a custom password after creating their account by registering their phone number and completing the standard six-digit verification process. This will not allow criminals to gain access to a user's account, even with the verification codes through social engineering or phishing attacks.

Once the password feature is live, users will be able to choose an alphanumeric password that is between six and twenty characters. The user will need at minimum one letter and one number. The user will also have access to a password strength indicator to assist them with selecting stronger passwords, thus improving the security of how they verify themselves on the messaging app and also providing a stronger level of account protection. This feature is an option, which means that the user can turn it on, change it or remove it anytime through settings. Once enabled, the user will have to enter the password after your one-time code before logging into your account with 2-step verification for the enhanced protection of your account that has been added.

The addition of this feature is part of WhatsApp's overall desire to enhance the privacy of users and protect against the hacking of accounts. The feature aims to reduce unauthorized account access by mobile device users. The gradual rollout of this feature underscores the increased emphasis on advanced mobile app security features, zero-trust authentication models, and strong digital identity validation tools in light of the significant role that messaging applications play in today's social communications.
