Tata Group, OpenAI Partner for India’s First AI Data Centre

Tata Group and OpenAI together will build a large AI data centre in India, with the aim to improve infrastructure, innovation, and nationwide AI adoption.

Tata Group announced their partnership with OpenAI with the aim to develop India’s first large-scale, AI-optimized data centre at the India AI Impact Summit 2026. To start, they will offer 100 megawatts of capacity and, once complete, expand to 1 gigawatt. This will place India as a competitive player in the worldwide AI infrastructure market. Chairman N. Chandrasekaran stated that artificial intelligence “is the next major infrastructure” and will change the way companies operate, how governments serve citizens, and how people interact with each other. He also emphasized that all citizens will benefit from AI and should not just be available to a select number of companies or cities.

Generally, the one-gigawatt data centre will cost an estimated $35-$50 billion and will be specifically designed to accommodate advanced AI training and inference processing. This will illustrate that there is a growing requirement for AI cloud infrastructure for large language model training, efficient use of energy by hyperscale data centres in India and new AI computing platforms that will assist enterprises in changing the way they operate.

Chandrasekaran noted that India has strong digital platforms such as the national digital identity and instantaneous money transfer systems, which process a significant percentage of all digital transactions around the world. These platforms will provide a foundation for the growth of AI-based resources to build out public infrastructure in developing nations with respect to digital service delivery as well as for creating AI-based solutions that have the potential to scale into productive businesses.

The Tata Group intends to use AI throughout its business operations and partner globally to accelerate the speed of implementation of AI. The initiative was designed to assist AI adoption in India’s IT services industry, promote inclusive AI development for entrepreneurs in rural areas, and enhance HPC infrastructure in support of generative AI applications through the advancement of AI in India.
