Big Winter Storm Cancels Thousands of Flights Across U.S

A winter storm cancels many flights, strands travelers, causes delays, and airlines help with rebooking or refunds.

Thousands of flights were cancelled, and passengers were left stranded at major airports on Sunday because of a massive winter storm sweeping the United States. Almost 180 million American citizens from the Southern Rocky Mountains to New England have been subject to snow, sleet, and freezing rain because of one of the most disruptive events in US history, which involved a snowfall disruption. There have been major cancellations and delays because of 1 to 2 feet snowfalls from Boston to Washington.

According to FlightAware and Cirium, the number of flights that were canceled on Sunday night was more than 11,000. This was the highest number of cancellations after the pandemic within one day. Up to 90% of flights were reportedly canceled at major airports such as LaGuardia, JFK, and Philly, while DFW, Charlotte, and Atlanta airports were greatly affected. US-based airlines, like American Airlines, Delta Airlines, Southwest Airlines, United Airlines, and JetBlue, have all announced cancellations across their routes, as this resulted in delays even if they were not at first affected by this storm. In an effort by these airlines to readjust their aircraft as well as staff following severe weather conditions, recovery is going to take days.

As stipulated in the U.S. passenger rights regulations, the flight airlines offer free rebooking or full refunds to passengers, irrespective of whether the ticket is refundable or not. To make the rebooking process easier, many airlines are now offering weather service advisories and travel waivers. Departure boards are still displaying words such as ‘delayed’ and ‘cancelled’ in airports and hotel lobbies nationwide, while social media is flooded with current travel alerts and flight disruption tips during winter storms. Weather experts predict that by the middle of the week, the storm will slowly weaken. In order to restore regular service by Friday, airlines use AI-based rescheduling solutions as well as future-generation aircraft recovery solutions. This suggests how future travel challenges could be addressed more accurately.
