Microsoft acquires Osmos to accelerate autonomous data engineering and transform raw data into AI-ready analytics assets.
Microsoft has declared its intention to acquire Osmos, a startup located in Seattle that specializes in automating data engineering processes. This acquisition is part of Microsoft's overall strategy to improve Microsoft Fabric, the company's data-analyzing platform. The amount of money that Microsoft will pay to acquire Osmos has not yet been released to the public. Since 2019, Osmos was started to help businesses integrate their external sources of data (e.g., customers, suppliers, partners, etc.) into one complete view of their business. As the business matured, Osmos began experimenting with a new approach that involved using large language models to be built directly into a data engineering workflow and creating products on top of the extensibility capabilities offered by Microsoft Fabric's platforms.
Osmos' entire team will become part of Microsoft's engineering organization that works on Microsoft Fabric, which was launched in 2023. The goal of Microsoft Fabric is to create a single location that combines data engineering, data science, real-time analytics, and business intelligence. Microsoft's Bogdan Crivat, who heads the Azure Data Analytics team, stated that the combined capabilities will allow organizations to convert raw data into assets that are "ready for analytics and AI". Currently, many organizations are devoting too much time preparing data to be able to do analysis. The CEO of Osmos, Kirat Pandya, expressed that the new partnership will provide an opportunity to accelerate technology development and reach a wider audience through existing data platforms.
Microsoft will integrate Osmos technology into Azure as part of its acquisition of the company. As part of that integration, Osmos will stop offering its products and services on January 2026. This will include Uploaders, Pipelines, and Datasets, as well as the data agents for Databricks and Fabric. The intention of the acquisition is to take advantage of innovative startup technologies to enhance Microsoft's capabilities related to data analytics and to improve enterprise data management solutions.
