Private aircraft from Acapulco crashes near Toluca airport, investigation ongoing after deadly fire
A plane crash in Mexico City happened on Monday, December 15, where a small private plane crashed during an emergency landing, leading to the death of at least seven people. As reported by Mexico State Civil Protection Coordinator Adrián Hernández, the plane crash was observed in San Mateo Atenco, an industrial area located approximately five kilometers, or three miles, from Toluca Airport, which is approximately 50 kilometers, or 31 miles, west of Mexico City. This plane had departed from Acapulco, an area along Mexico's Pacific coast.
The plane, carrying eight passengers and two flight staff members, attempted to land on a soccer field but was unable to do so. The plane crashed on the metal roofing of a nearby business, starting a massive fire. Hours had gone by with no end in sight to the search, and just seven bodies had been found. The crash is still under investigation.
San Mateo Atenco Mayor, Ana Muñiz, reported to Milenio Television that there was considerable damage and evacuation of 130 people in nearby buildings as a result of the fire outbreak. Firefighters were quickly dispatched to control the situation that ensued.
The plane crash that occurred today has shocked the whole community. The whole community is currently in a state of grief due to the loss of lives incurred during this tragic plane crash. The investigation into the cause of the plane crash is still being carried out.
The plane crash comes as the latest in a string of incidents involving small planes in the area, which has sparked demands for improved aviation safety regulations.
