The partnership is to improve EV charging, support renewables, and improve grid stability across Europe.
Virta, a world leader in smart electric vehicle (EV) charging, and Voltalis, a European leader in demand-side flexibility, have partnered to increase EV flexibility solutions in the Nordic region and across Europe. The partnership handles the urgent need for intelligent, data-based charging solutions as the use of EVs is growing more quickly than grid infrastructure.
Virta's advanced EV charging infrastructure, that runs more than 120,000 charge stations and serves more than 1,000 business customers in 35 countries, is combined with Voltalis' nearly 20 years of experience in combining flexible energy assets. In order to balance the demand and supply of electricity, the companies work together to improve charging timings, allow the integration of clean energy sources, and offer constant flexibility.
EVs can actively help the energy system by collecting renewable generation, reducing grid fluctuations, and creating additional earnings for businesses, developers, and providers through automatic control of electricity usage in response to grid signals. The compatibility of Voltalis' virtual power plant (VPP) platform with Virta's e-mobility VPP capabilities will be explored through pilot programs in Finland and Sweden, producing measurable increases in grid reliability and cost efficiency.
In order to develop frameworks for EV flexibility in wholesale and balancing markets, the partnership will include grid operators and regulators. To increase acceptance in France, the UK, and other European markets, operational and technical information will be shared. Virta increases the uses of its charging technology, while Voltalis enters the Nordic market faster because of the partnership. According to Sébastien Condom, SVP at Voltalis, "EVs are more than transport assets, they are essential elements of a flexible, durable, and carbon-free energy system." EVs and smart grids together power a cleaner, resilient, and intelligent future.
