Explosion in Hyundai i20 near Red Fort leaves casualties; NIA, NSA launch investigation.
At least eight people were killed and over 20 were injured in a strong explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday evening; this triggered a high alert in major Indian cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, and Hyderabad. The blast occurred at 6:52 p.m. when a Hyundai i20 car slowed down at the traffic signal near Gate 1 of the Red Fort Metro Station. The blast caused nearby vehicles to catch fire, sending panic among the commuters and residents in this crowded area.
According to officials, the car bore a Haryana registration number and its registered owner has been detained for questioning. Investigations revealed that the vehicle had changed hands multiple times; Sources said fake documents might have been used during the vehicle’s resale transactions and efforts are underway to trace the original owner.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah said that the NIA and NSA are investigating every possible angle. The reason behind the blast is not known yet, and forensic teams have been sent to ascertain whether this explosion happened because of a mechanical fault, explosive material, or deliberate sabotage.
According to Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha, the blast occurred when the vehicle was stopped at a red light. “Nearby vehicles were damaged due to the impact,” he said. The Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, conveyed condolences to the families of those who lost their lives and wished the injured a speedy recovery. He said he was constantly monitoring the situation with Home Minister Shah and senior officials. The blast comes just hours after police busted an interstate terror module and seized 2,900 kg of ammonium nitrate, though officials have clarified that the Red Fort explosion is not connected to that case.
