CNAP’s launch helps users identify calls and reduce spam and fraud while showing the caller names.
The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) are close to finishing their plan to offer the Calling Name Presentation (CNAP) service. This aims to improve security for users and transparency in mobile communication. Major progress toward national implementation has been made with the agreement between the two agencies on important points for its launch.
During incoming calls, the CNAP feature will display the caller's name and phone number, helping users to identify unknown calls and reducing spam or fraudulent communications. According to TRAI, CNAP should be allowed by default for all users, with the option for them to opt out. In addition, CNAP will meet the worldwide telecom standards. When infrastructure is available, the rollout will start with 4G and 5G networks before moving to 2G networks. It is expected that this methodical strategy will ensure smooth adoption without interfering with past systems.
In order to match user names to phone numbers, telecom companies will have to create fully secure databases. The feature will not be available to those who desire to hide their caller ID. In addition, TRAI suggested that CNAP would be supported by all new mobile devices sold in India within six months of the government's announcement. It is also considering establishing CNAP under the licensing system by modifying the telecom license definition of Calling Line Identification (CLI) to include both the number and the name. CNAP has the ability to transform how Indians answer calls, and everyday communication will be guided by trust, transparency, and privacy online.
