FCC Votes to Expand US Telecom Crackdown on China with New Testing Lab Bans

Federal Communications Commission unanimously advances sweeping restrictions on Chinese technology firms to strengthen US network security.

The decision by the Federal Communications Commission came after a unanimous vote against allowing any Chinese laboratories to conduct tests on electronic devices bound for US markets. According to the US telecommunications regulator, about 75% of all electronics manufactured in America are tested in China, underscoring the need for stricter measures. The FCC intends to implement an approval system for devices tested in the United States or in other nations whose operations are not considered a threat to national security.

In another 3-0 vote, the US telecom authority pushed forward proposals to prevent China Mobile, China Telecom, and China Unicom from setting up any data center in the US. The commission is considering measures to prohibit telecommunication carriers from interconnecting with firms that have been included in their "Covered List." This move follows a decision by the FCC to block telecom operators affiliated with the listed firms and interconnections with carriers employing hardware products from Huawei and ZTE.

Brendan Carr, the Chairman of the FCC, said, "We are taking a number of steps to ensure that our networks are protected from these bad actors by restricting their interconnectivity." This shows how the FCC is stepping up its efforts to secure the US telecommunications infrastructure from Chinese technological threats.

This recent move comes after several other measures the FCC has taken. For example, in December, the organization stopped importing drones manufactured by Chinese companies. Last month, the FCC prohibited the importation of consumer routers made by Chinese companies. Earlier in October, the FCC began revoking the license of the Hong Kong Telecommunications Company, which operates within the US. Business Honor notes that this latest move is part of the FCC's continued effort to impose comprehensive restrictions on Chinese technology companies.
