The EU announced a new AI plan, improving healthcare, industry, and public services while training workers and supporting businesses.
The European Commission announced a new plan to quicken the adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) across Europe's major industries, public administration, and healthcare. The document supports an "AI-first" approach, based on a leaked copy that EUobserver had the chance to view. This means, when met with new challenges, businesses and governmental organizations should always ask, "How can AI help?" Commission President Ursula von der Leyen recently issued this message.
The European Union aims to create advanced artificial intelligence screening centers and a European Network of AI Knowledge to exchange best practices in the healthcare industry. Allowing for a common industrial data pool and speeding the development of AI technologies from research labs to practical uses in manufacturing and construction. In addition to new rules under the most recent European Interoperability Framework, public administrations will have access to an AI toolbox to support them in implementing trustworthy generative AI technology.
Simpler rules under the AI Act, the AI Act Service Desk, and a mobile app are designed to help implementation and are helpful for small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs). With more funding from the Horizon Europe program, that has already invested €50 million in AI projects, the Frontier AI Project will bring together researchers, businesses, and politicians to promote innovation.
Another important component of the plan is preparing the workforce in Europe. The AI Skills Academy offers customized training focusing on supporting workers who face automation's risk of replacement. With the support of an AI Observatory to track AI usage across the EU, a new organization called the Apply AI Alliance will act as an important focus for AI supporters. To simplify and guarantee the future of AI rules, the Commission is considering the idea of modifying the AI Act as part of the upcoming Digital Omnibus.
