AECOM Hunt and Turner is chosen for the new stadium, that opens in 2029 amid legal challenges.
The Cleveland Browns and Haslam Sports Group have taken an important step toward achieving their desired proposal by selecting the construction firm for their planned $2.4 billion indoor stadium in Brook Park. AECOM Hunt and Turner Construction will manage the construction of Huntington Bank Field, a stadium with 67,500 seats that can be stretched to 75,000 for concerts and major events. Both businesses have built or rebuilt stadiums for many NFL teams. Turner has worked with at least 17 NFL teams, while AECOM supported the construction of Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta and SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles.
At the 178-acre site of the former Ford plant, that's close to Interstates 480 and 71, site preparation has already begun. The plan is to open the stadium in time for the 2029 NFL season, that matches with the expiration of the Browns' lease at their current stadium in downtown Cleveland, with an official construction expected in 2026. HKS, a firm known for building modern sports stadiums, is designing the stadium. It will be a part of a larger entertainment zone and has a transparent roof to allow in natural light.
The project is financed in part by Haslam Sports Group, with the remaining $600 million being provided by the State of Ohio and $300 million from city-generated taxes like admission fees. Legal issues remain surrounding the proposal, however; Cleveland is trying to stop relocation, and another action challenges the use of public funds. Yet, David Jenkins, president of Haslam Sports Group, claims the stadium will benefit the area "We're constructing more than a stadium—we're constructing a future financial engine." If all goes as expected, the Browns will play their first game in a modern stadium by 2029, helping with the transformation of Brook Park into a sports, entertainment, and growth hub.
