Google Translate now enables seamless live voice translation in over 70 languages and offers tailored speaking and listening.
Google Translate is getting a big upgrade that goes far beyond simply converting text. Powered by advanced AI models from Google’s Gemini technology, the app now supports real-time spoken translations and adds a personalized language practice feature, turning the app into both a live interpreter and a language coach.
The standout update is the Live Translate mode, which lets people have back-and-forth conversations in more than 70 languages. This includes languages like Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, and Tamil. It works like this: open the app on an Android or iOS device, tap "Live translate," chooses the languages, and speaks. The app immediately plays spoken translations aloud and shows both sides of the conversation with on-screen transcripts. It also handles speaker changes, accents, and pauses, even in noisy environments like bustling cafes or airports. This powerful feature is already available in the U.S., India and Mexico.
In addition, Google Translate now includes a customized practice mode built for people learning a language. Users pick their proficiency level from beginner, intermediate or advanced and define their goals, like preparing for travel or business conversations. The app then generates interactive scenarios on the fly. To improve comprehension, users can either speak aloud with helpful instructions guiding them or listen to or tap words they recognize. As users advance, the exercises adjust, and they even monitor their progress. This beta version initially facilitates Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers learning English as well as English speakers learning Spanish and French.
With these two features, Google Translate becomes a dynamic tool that goes beyond translation of an AI-powered language assistant that enables users to practice speaking and listening confidently and communicate between languages in real time. The combination of Gemini’s multimodal AI, including speech recognition and text to speech features, marks an important leap in making multilingual communication more intuitive and human-like.
