Greeks can now report marine pollution in real time using an AI-powered app, which supports faster response and conservation efforts.
Greeks have the opportunity to contribute to sea conservation by reporting pollution in real time with an updated mobile app. Interreg IPA ADRION program focuses on marine waste and pollution caused by climate change and includes the app that can be downloaded from the Google Play Store.
Along with the Institute of Informatics and Telecommunications for Scientific Research "Demokritos," the South Aegean Regional Development Agency, ENERGEIAKI S.A., leads the effort locally. Initiative's core element is a digital platform that improves pollution tracking and control by combining artificial intelligence with the public's participation.
The software helps users to take pictures of pollution at the shore or sea and quickly upload them. An AI-powered system that continuously defines and examines these pictures remains in storage. In addition to establishing an ongoing record for understanding pollution patterns and dangers, this helps local authorities in responding to instances of pollution more quickly and effectively.
The software allows everyone to take an active role in the protection of the marine environment with the use of smartphones and smart technology. It converts simple observations into useful data. This software reflects a shift from expert-only activities to community-based action based on technology as worries like waste plastic and oil leaks increase. Aiming to grow across the Adriatic-Ionian region and use equipment like drones and satellite imagery. This marine monitoring could one day be totally combined, with citizens, drones, boats, and satellites leading to a digital shield, protecting our oceans for future generations.
