India Post integrates with ONDC and GeM, modernizing services with IT solutions for enhanced efficiency.
India Post is making leaps and bounds towards modernizing its operations by consolidating its functions into national digital platforms such as the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC) and the Government e-Marketplace (GeM). The initiative is meant to make postal services more accessible and efficient and make India Post a competitor in the logistics segment, particularly vis-a-vis third-party logistics operators. With the IT 2.0 structure, the Department of Posts is making an effort to include advanced technological solutions in its vast network of more than 86,000 post offices spread across the nation, with an aim for full integration by August 4, 2025, when all the 165,000 post offices will be modernized. The transformation will utilize open APIs, prepaid bookings wallet-based, and centralized order tracking on ONDC for improved delivery of services and real-time tracking of parcels.
Key IT-driven improvement includes computerized reconciliation with the financial systems of ONDC to enable simple financial transactions. Additionally, automated pricing through APIs and payment tracking dashboards and cash-on-delivery (COD) settlement through collaboration with GeM will be facilitated. These platforms will enable India Post to provide tailor-made services for bulk consumers, electronic proof of delivery, and OTP-based authentication for secured transactions. Also, India Post is upgrading its infrastructure with centrally located delivery hubs, which expedite sorting of mail and parcels. These centers, currently operational in 344 outlets, allow for more convenient delivery, including Sunday and public holiday services, with morning and evening time slots.
As integration continues, India Post will provide a technology-fostered, robust, and customer-friendly logistics solution that closes the gap between conventional postal services and emerging e-commerce needs. The digital revolution ushers in a new dawn for the Indian postal service and solidifies it in the global and domestic logistics supply chain.
