Power11 offers near-perfect uptime, enhanced security, and AI-ready hybrid cloud solutions.
IBM has revealed its new Power11 processors and servers aimed at maximizing power efficiency and simplifying it for businesses to incorporate AI. IBM's new Power11 system is the company's first major upgrade to its Power chip line since 2020, when it unveiled Power10 with Samsung. Power11 implements the latest chips and software within a combined single package, delivering superior performance, enhanced security, and greater reliability. According to IBM General Manager of Power Systems, Tom McPherson, integration enables businesses to count on a system that sustains mission-critical workloads with minimal interruption.
One thing that Power11 excels at is its nearly flawless uptime. IBM asserts the system will not require scheduled downtime for updates, and unplanned downtime will be less than 30 seconds annually, giving users 99.9999% uptime. This is made possible with autonomous patching and automated workload migration, which allow systems to operate even during maintenance. Though IBM's system design resembles that of NVIDIA, the company is not playing the role of a direct competitor. IBM is making AI more practical and easier to use for organizations. IBM views Power11 as a principal tool for businesses embracing hybrid cloud, AI, and automation solutions.
The new IBM Power11 systems will be officially released on July 25, 2025. Later this year, in Q4, IBM also plans to integrate Power11 with its advanced AI chip, Spyre. Introduced in August 2024, Spyre is designed to support large-scale AI inference, particularly for IBM Z systems. With Power11, IBM competes again with Intel and AMD in high-priority markets such as healthcare, finance, and manufacturing, providing a strong and simplified entry into the AI world.
