Despite financial concerns, IBM's commitment to AI and cloud services keeps it positioned for future growth.
Erste Group’s analyst Hans Engel downgraded IBM from Buy to Hold on February 18.. The downgrade came as a surprise to some, as IBM has been on an upward trajectory with respect to AI initiatives; however due to declining infrastructure growth, decreasing performance in consulting, and increasing financial pressures, it appears that IBM’s stock could potentially remain flat over the near future.
Notwithstanding the fact that Engel downgraded the stock of IBM, management is making substantial progress with respect to AI. Specifically, it is actively working to monetize its own cloud service by providing AI-related services, and developing its own AI chip. Both of these aspects are indicative of the company’s intent to take advantage of its capabilities to maintain market share in this technology space, particularly given the rapid pace of change.
In addition, Engel identified several negative indicators associated with IBM’s performance, specifically identifying that the company’s operating margin had materially decreased, and that its long-term liabilities had substantially increased. Thus, while there are several areas of the company where progress is being made, there are also numerous financial indicators that suggest that the overall outlook of the stock may be challenged going forward.
IBM has established itself as a leader in AI consulting and software solutions; however, it also continues to be acknowledged for its work in the industry despite fluctuations in overall market sentiment. According to Erste Group, the current state of the AI market offers many other options greater than IBM for potential strong returns, although its long-standing reputation for solid technology and continued investment into innovative solutions makes it a significant player within the space. Since the future is unknown, given IBM's long-running history and its commitment to A.I.-driven innovation; it will likely remain at the front of the AI industry.
