Improved traceability initiatives boost safety, quality, and consumer trust in Indian seafood exports.
At a recent national workshop on Traceability for Fisheries Value Chains, specialists underlined traceability's pivotal contribution to improving the global competitiveness of Indian seafood products. Sagar Mehra, Joint Secretary, Department of Fisheries, spoke about how traceability systems need to be modernized to keep seafood safe and assure quality, particularly in light of mounting international regulations.
Speaking at the workshop, Mehra emphasized that everybody in the seafood supply chain, starting from the primary producers to the exporters, has to coordinate to improve traceability. He cited current projects under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), which seeks to bring aquaculture and capture fisheries producers under an integrated traceability system. This will extend more transparency so that the seafood consumed is both safe and of quality.
J K Jena, Deputy Director General (Fisheries) at ICAR, clarified that traceability isn't restricted to packaging but extends to every facet of the value chain—right from production to retailing. This complete traceability assists in generating consumer confidence and making Indian seafood a trustworthy product in the international market.
The workshop further witnessed Dodda Venkata Swamy, MPEDA Chairman, emphasizing the need to enhance quality standards for exports and the domestic market. The conference had stakeholders such as government agencies, regulators, and industry players all agreeing on the need to come up with a national framework for the fisheries industry.
The workshop ended with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Department of Fisheries, Uttarakhand, and the ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Technology (CIFT) for the establishment of a fish processing unit in Uttarakhand to support the development of value-added fishery products. India is placing itself to supply the increasing demand from around the world for safe and high-quality seafood by emphasizing traceability.
