Experts cite unregulated construction and farm fires as major contributors to Mumbai's deteriorating air quality crisis.
Once, Mumbai's pleasant aroma came from saltiness of the ocean and fresh Plant Air & Ocean-Borne Hazards. Now it's trying to address its air pollution through decreasing levels of its Air Quality Index (AQI); So many pollutants now contribute significantly (including construction activities & vehicular traffic) but some lesser-known pollutants such as crop fires in adjacent cities and uncontrolled waste burning are also impacts that have caused concern. Recent reports show that on multiple occasions, Mumbai has surpassed on multiple occasions; its city has surpassed a value above 350 at nearly all times within the past 2 months; on two or very near seven separate days, Mumbai was at approx. 400 or so on four occasions and has always been above this larger amount.
Saiyami Kher the actor aired her concern about the air quality in Mumbai. Dalip Tahil another actor brought to light the air quality issues during an interview on India Today TV. Dalip wore a facemask and used a portable air purifier during the interview while addressing the severity of the air quality issue. He indicated that several properties are being redeveloped in the suburbs where the redevelopment work is keeping dust in the air causing a localized "dust bowl" to have a negative impact on people who live in the surrounding area.
The judiciary is aware of this. The High Court of Bombay expressed their concern regarding the rising pollution levels and chastised the BMC and the NMMC for not taking action to reduce pollution levels. The court has advised the city to suspend the salaries of municipal commissioners due to their refusal to take steps to address the issue of rising pollution levels. The issue of farm fires in the surrounding area gained traction on social media after pilot Vishal Jolapara posted a cockpit photo showing many farm fires near the hinterlands around Mumbai. His post demonstrates that the easterly winds are blowing the pollutants from these fires into Mumbai and adding to the existing air quality problem.
