Google introduces Search Live, a real-time AI search feature based on voice that widens hands-free, conversational experiences within its mobile app.
Google has announced a new feature named Search Live, which allows people to have real-time, voice-driven conversations within its Android and iOS Search app. Available now in the U.S. for users taking part in the AI Mode experiment through Google Labs, this change makes user interaction with search more natural, conversational, and hands-free.
Convenient and multitasking-friendly, Search Live allows users to voice commands and get back text-based responses generated by AI, with on-screen web addresses to drill down further. For instance, a user can say, "How do I pack a linen dress without wrinkles?" and thereafter pose questions such as, "What if it still wrinkles?" without having to type or interrupt what they are doing.
What distinguishes Search Live is that it can be done in the background, and the user can keep navigating with voice commands and other apps. The feature also includes a transcript button for viewing text versions of the conversation and typing additional queries. Users can revisit previous sessions through their AI Mode history.
Powered by a specialized version of Google’s Gemini AI model, Search Live is built on Google Search’s foundational quality and relevance systems. It uses a query fan-out approach to deliver a wide range of web content, promoting deeper and more meaningful discovery.
To try Search Live, users must opt into the AI Mode experiment through Labs. A new “Live” icon then appears beneath the search bar, signaling the feature is ready.
Google intends to extend Search Live's functionality later in the year, such as camera integration—which would enable users to share what they're seeing for even more immersive, real-time AI conversations. This is a big step towards a more interactive and multimodal search.
