Building trust online with user-controlled, privacy-centered digital IDs and secure access.
Governments and tech innovators are one step closer to a secure digital future with enhanced identity and access management systems. A recent Euronews debate examined the progress and challenges facing digital identity systems, especially in Europe and Switzerland.
Switzerland is voting on whether to implement a new e-ID (electronic identification) system. The country had previously rejected one proposal on privacy grounds. This time, the Swiss government is including experts, businesses, and civil society to make the system more securely locked down and reliable. The new e-ID will be designed with privacy, control, and transparency in mind, allowing users to choose how much personal data they want to share.
Experts across the world, including Canada and Bhutan, were studied to create a more user-focused and secure framework. President of the Digital Identity and Data Sovereignty Association (DIDAS), Daniel Sauberli, said the goal is to enable people to own their digital identities while roaming safely online.
Agnieszka Wyszynska-Szulc of PMI noted that e-IDs might be used to verify age, prevent fraud, and ensure compliance. For businesses, the result would be greater trust and secure online transactions.
Another important topic discussed was artificial intelligence (AI). They warned that AI makes it easier to create fake identities and documents. Digital ID systems need to be strengthened to prevent misuse and ensure that the data remains secure.
The concept of a digital wallet where users can keep verified documents such as IDs, diplomas, or certifications is gaining momentum. User agency and privacy design are important to gaining popular support.
With the advent of the virtual world, trust and access are to be matched. Easy-to-use and secure e-ID systems may facilitate users, businesses, and administrations to conduct trusted online spaces successfully.
