Whimsical Comic ‘Macanudo’ Gets Animated Adaptation from Mercury Filmworks & Sun Creature

Beloved Argentine comic heads to screens in vibrant, kid-friendly animated TV format.

King Features Syndicate has announced that the internationally celebrated comic strip Macanudo is being adapted into an animated television series, in collaboration with two renowned studios: Canada’s Mercury Filmworks (Hilda) and Sun Creature Studio (The Heroic Quest of the Valiant Prince Ivandoe), based in France. The upcoming series, “Macanudo: The Series,” will comprise 26 episodes of 11 minutes each and is currently in development.

This charming new animated project will focus on two children, Henrietta and Martincito, whose boundless imagination allows them to tap into “Macanudo” — the power to perceive magic in the mundane. Set in the fictional city of Nuevo Aires, the show aims to explore childhood wonder, featuring supporting characters like a talking cat named Fellini and an imaginary monster named Olga.

Targeting children aged 6 to 11, the series is designed to capture the spirit of the original comic, blending whimsy and introspection in a way that resonates with both younger viewers and their parents. With over 12.5 million readers across print and digital, Macanudo — created by Argentine cartoonist Ricardo Liniers Siri (Liniers) — has become one of Latin America’s most beloved comic strips, often likened to classics like Calvin & Hobbes and Peanuts.

C.J. Kettler, President of King Features, emphasized the project’s potential to bring this Latin American treasure to new audiences worldwide. “This is our latest step in reimagining iconic comic strips for modern families,” she said.

The series will be showcased during this year’s MIFA Pitches Program at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, offering a glimpse at character designs, scripts, and visual development.

Macanudo: The Series is expected to become a delightful addition to children’s animation, with themes of creativity, imagination, and joyful discovery at its heart.
