Taqa buys UK's Transmission Investment to enhance global energy portfolio and assist low-carbon infrastructure growth.
Abu Dhabi utility giant Taqa has strengthened its overseas energy portfolio with the purchase of UK-based Transmission Investment (TI), a top performer in offshore power transmission. The acquisition marks Taqa Transmission’s first overseas investment and strengthens its position in the global energy and utility infrastructure sector.
Transmission Investment, set up in 2009, is a well-known player in the UK offshore transmission industry, with assets worth about Dh15 billion (£3 billion). It has acquired and operated 11 offshore transmission assets linking wind farms to the UK national grid. Its joint venture with Amber Infrastructure and International Public Partnerships has been picked recently by UK regulator Ofgem as the preferred bidder for the Moray West OFTO project.
Taqa Transmission, which is a member of Abu Dhabi-based Taqa Group, is the sole high-voltage electricity and bulk water transmission operator in Abu Dhabi and the largest owner of transmission assets in the UAE. It is expanding its presence in the GCC, UK, and North Africa through investment in innovative energy infrastructure projects.
“This acquisition reinforces Taqa’s commitment to low-carbon power solutions and supports the UK’s 2050 Net Zero goals,” said Dr. Afif Saif Al Yafei, CEO of Taqa Transmission. “TI’s expertise will accelerate our international growth while enhancing our sustainability strategy.”
In the MENA region, Taqa just finished a $3.8 billion venture with ADNOC to develop a 1,000-kilometer high-voltage direct current (HVDC) subsea transmission network—the region's first such venture. Also, Taqa closed financing for the Juranah water reservoir project in Saudi Arabia, solidifying its position in energy and utility transformation further.
Taqa's strategic purchase reflects its drive to be a global leader in energy transition efforts, emphasizing reliability, sustainability, and innovation in utility infrastructure.
